All-In-One Grow Bags: Why Pre-Sterilized Substrates Are Changing Home Mycology
The barrier to entry for mycology has historically been high, requiring pressure cookers, still air boxes, and a deep understanding of sterile technique. The advent of the All-In-One grow bag has democratized mushroom cultivation.
Anatomy of an All-In-One Bag
Products like the Magic Bag feature a layered approach within a single filter-patch bag: 1. The Grain Layer: A layer of sterilized grain (like millet or rye) at the bottom, which acts as the initial inoculation point and nutrient source.
2. The Bulk Substrate Layer: A layer of pasteurized CVG (coir, vermiculite, gypsum) or compost resting on top of the grain.
The Workflow
1. Inoculation: Inject a liquid culture (highly recommended to use MYYCO liquid cultures) directly into the grain layer. 2. Colonization: Allow the mycelium to fully colonize the grain.
3. The Break and Shake: Once the grain is colonized, massage the bag to mix the grain evenly into the bulk substrate layer. This explosive expansion colonizes the entire block in days. 4. Fruiting: Introduce air directly into the bag or move the colonized block into a fruiting chamber.
Why They Work
These bags mitigate the most risky step of cultivation: spawning to bulk in open air. By keeping the entire process sealed within a micro-filtered environment, contamination rates plummet, making them ideal for beginners and efficiency-focused growers.
