The supplement market is flooded with mushroom products, but a vast majority offer zero bioavailable benefits due to improper processing. The fungal cell wall is composed of chitin, an incredibly tough biopolymer that human digestion cannot break down.

Hot Water Extraction: Freeing the Beta-Glucans

Water-soluble compounds, primarily (1,3)(1,6)-beta-D-glucans, are responsible for the immune-modulating properties of mushrooms like Turkey Tail and Maitake. To break the chitin walls and release these polysaccharides, the fruiting body must undergo a prolonged hot water decoction. If a label just says "mushroom powder," your body will pass it without absorbing these vital compounds.

Alcohol Extraction: Isolating Terpenes

Lipophilic (fat-soluble) compounds, such as the neurogenic hericenones in Lion's Mane or the adaptogenic triterpenes in Reishi, are insoluble in water. They require extraction using high-proof alcohol (ethanol).

The Dual Extract Gold Standard

A true Dual Extract involves performing both a hot water and an alcohol extraction, then combining the yields. This ensures a full-spectrum product.

When seeking out high-quality functional mushrooms, look for products that specify their extraction method and guarantee beta-glucan percentages, such as premium Lion's Mane extract or Reishi extract tinctures.
