Dialing In Fruiting Conditions: FAE, Humidity, Temperature & Light Cycles

Transitioning mycelium from the vegetative state to the fruiting phase requires precise environmental triggers. In nature, mushrooms fruit in response to a drop in temperature, increased rainfall, and fresh air following a rainstorm.

Fresh Air Exchange (FAE) vs. Humidity

The most common mistake cultivators make is suffocating their mycelium in an attempt to maintain high humidity.

  • Humidity: Mycelium is 90% water. The fruiting environment must maintain 95-99% Relative Humidity (RH) to prevent the substrate from drying out and aborting pins.
  • FAE: Mushrooms breathe oxygen and exhale CO2. High CO2 levels lead to "fuzzy feet" (mycelium climbing the stipe) and elongated, spindly stems.

The Balance: Introduce FAE through fanning or filtered holes (like in a Monotub), and compensate for the lost moisture by misting the walls of the enclosure—never spray pins directly.

Temperature and Light

  • Temperature: Dropping the temperature by 5-10°F from the colonization temperature (typically down to 70-74°F) signals the mycelium to reproduce.
  • Light: While mushrooms do not photosynthesize, light acts as a directional trigger, telling the pins which way to grow. A 12/12 light cycle using a 6500K spectrum bulb is ideal.
