Grain Spawn Prep: Pressure Cooking, Moisture Content, and Sterilization Science

Grain spawn is the energetic battery that powers your mushroom flush. The preparation of this grain—dictating its moisture content and sterility—is the most critical phase of cultivation.

The Importance of Hydration

Grains (such as rye, oats, or millet) must be hydrated to approximately 50-55% moisture content.

  • Too Dry: Mycelial growth will stall due to lack of water.
  • Too Wet: Excess water pooling at the bottom of the jar creates anaerobic conditions, leading to "wet rot" or bacterial contamination.

The Boil and Simmer Method: Grains are typically soaked for 12-24 hours, then simmered until the kernels are fully swollen but not burst. Drying the outside of the grains before jarring is essential to prevent clumping.

The Physics of Sterilization

Fungal and bacterial endospores are incredibly resilient. Boiling water (212°F / 100°C) is insufficient to kill them. A pressure cooker raises the boiling point of water. At 15 PSI, steam reaches 250°F (121°C).

Sterilization requires maintaining this temperature for a minimum of 90 minutes. This thermal death time ensures the complete eradication of competitive organisms.
